DANIEL'S Four Prophetic Visions

...for the End

Ed Corley

MUCH of the imagery and language of Daniel belong to the Old Covenant, but the revelation that came to him points to New Covenant reality. Each vision reaches for the time of the end. The substance of each cross-reference points toward the same.

After many years in the Book of Daniel, this is the outline that has developed in my own Bible. Reading it alone will not give you instant answers. If you impose it upon your Bible and read the chapters over and over, its light will break upon you. Of course, this has all developed out of Dan 12:4. But Thou, 0 Daniel, shut up The words, and seal The book, even to The time of the end: many shall run to and fro (with their eyes through the book), and knowledge shall be increased.

DANIEL 7
• This Chapter presents a vision of FOUR BEASTS arising from the sea. They depict four distinct principalities of government, contemporary one with the other. There is a lion with a man's heart--secular humanism; a bear with three ribs in its mouth--oppression; a leopard to which dominion was given--control; and a beast, dreadful and terrible-- exceeding great power. Although their beginnings were ancient, the principality of each remains in the earth unto the end when they come into significant posture on the world scene. The anti-Christ will arise, with a relatively small beginning, from the principality of the fourth beast. The force of his rule will become greater than all others as he vents his wrath against the saints of the most High.
• In this chapter the anti-Christ is called: ...a little horn--Dan 7:8,20, and 24-26.
• The revealed intentions of the little horn:
(1) It is his grand intention to make war with the saints and, thus, make them useless for God's Kingdom--Dan 7:21. ( • Dan 8:24; 11:33b; 12:7; • Rev 11:7-9; 12:3,4; 13:5-7; 17:6 + Mt 24:4-13 + Rev 12:11)
(2) He shall speak great words (in blasphemy) against the Most High God--Dan 7:25a. (•Ps 74:10; • Dan 8:24,25; 11:36; • II Th 2:4; • Rev 13:5,6 • PS 10:2-13 • Mk 3:28,29)
(3) He shall wear out (use up) the saints of the Most High--Dan 7:25b (• Mt 13:21; 24:21,22; • Rev 6:9-11; 13:7; 14:12,13; 16:4-7; 17:6; 18:24 • Rom 8:35-39•II Cor 1:3-5)
(4) And he shall think to change times and laws--Dan 7:25c. This means he will suppose he can change the ordinations of God with regard to set times, and a certain divine decree that seals his doom. (• Is 14:13,14; • Eze 28:2; Ps 10:4; • II Th 2:4 • Ps 2:1-8)
• The end of the little horn: But the judgment shall sit, and they (the saints) shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end--Dan 7:26.
• How the saints of God's Kingdom triumph over the little horn:
(1) Daniel saw that the Ancient of days did sit--Dan 7:9,10. Through all the attacks of the enemy, God's Throne remains secure. Thus, we learn the first point of the saints' triumph: they live in relation to the eternal Throne of God. (• Dan 2:34, 35, 44, 45; • Lam 5:19; • Ps 9:7; 45:6; 90:2; 93:2; 103:17; • Hab 1:12; • Rev 4:1-11 • Ps 11:1-7)
(2) Then Daniel saw One like the Son of Man come with the clouds of heaven... and there was given Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom--Dan 7:13,14. With all the attacks from the anti-Christ, nothing prevents the Lord Jesus from coming into His Kingdom on earth. The second point of the saints' triumph: they live in relation to the Kingdom of Christ and its triumph in the earth. ( • Ps 2:7,8; • Matt 24:30; 26:64; 28:18; • Lk 1:32; • Jn 3:35; 5:22; • Ac 2:36; • Phil 2:9,10; • Heb 1:1,2; • Rev 1:7; 17:14; 11:15 • Eph 1:18-23)
(3) Finally, with three powerful statements, Daniel tells how the Saints of the most High shall take the Kingdom--Dan 7:18; Dan 7:21, 22; Dan 7:25-27. The third point of the saints' triumph: they take the government from the little horn. ( • Ps 145:10-13; 149:5-9; • Mt 10:1; • Mk 6:7; • Lk 9:1; 10:19; • Mt 28:18-20; • II Tim 2:11, 12 • Eph 6:10-13)

DANIEL 8
• This Chapter presents a vision of a RAM and a RE-GOAT representing ancient Media-Persia and Greece. It shows the beginning and ending of the principality in which the anti-Christ apparently will arise. He takes his dominion through exaltation of himself in defiance of the Prince of princes, the Lord Jesus Christ--but he oversteps his bounds.
• In this chapter the anti-Christ is called..... a little horn-Dan 8:9-12;.. .a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark sentences-Dan 8:23-25.
• The revealed intentions of the king of fierce countenance:
(1) The king of fierce countenance, who begins as a little horn, will exalt himself against the host of heaven (all the authority of Heaven's government)--Dan 8:l0a. (• Dan 11:28-30; • Dan 11:36; • Isa 14:13; • Rev 12:4 + Ps 10:2-11)
(2) He will cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground--Dan 8: l0b. (Ps 37:11-14; Rev 12:4 + Rev 12:10)
(3) He will exalt himself against the Prince of the host--Dan 8:11a. (• Dan 5:22,23; 7:25; 8:25; 11:36; • II Ki 19:22,23; • II Chron 32:15-22; • Rev 13:5-7 + II Th 2:4)
(4) He will presume to take away the daily sacrifice (withstand the effect of Christ's eternal offering)--Dan 8:11b (• Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; • Ex 29:38-42; • Eze 46:13,14; 1 Pet 1:18,19 • Heb 10:14)
(5) He will cast down (bring desolation to) the place of His (Christ's) sanctuary--Dan 8:11c.
(• Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; • Mt 24:15; • Mk 13:14; • Lu 21:20 • I Cor 3:16,17)
(6) A host (an army of defectors) will be given him for the accomplishment of his goals--Dan 8:12a. (• Dan 11:3l, 32; • II Th 2:3, • I Tim 4:1 • II Tim 3:1-5)
(7) He will cast down truth to the ground, practice (carry on with his work), and prosper--Dan 8:12b, 24. (• Ps 9:6; • Rev 13:3-9 • Ps 73:1-17)
(8) He shall destroy (bring his corruption upon) the mighty and the holy people--Dan 8:24b
(• Matt 24:37-39; • Gen 6:11-13; • Ps 10:24; • II Pet 2:18,19; • II Cor 11:3 • Jude 10-25)
(9) He shall cause craft (deceit) to prosper--Dan 8:25a (• Matt 24:4, 5, 11, 24; • 11Th 2:9-11; • Rev 12:9; 13:11-18; 18:23d; 19:20; 20:3 • Eph 4:14, 15 and Eph 5:6)
(10) He shall magnify himself in his heart--Dan 8:25b. (• Dan 7:8, 25; 11:36; • 11 Th 1:4; • Rev 13:5, 6 • Pro 16:18)
(11) By peace (prosperity) he shall destroy (corrupt) man--Dan 8:25c (• Matt 6:19; 13:22; 19:16-30 • Mt 16:24)
(12) He shall also stand up against the Prince of princes (the Lord Himself)--Dan 8:25d (• Dan 11:36; • Ps 14:1; • Jer 48:42; Obad 3,4; Ps 36:9-12 • Lk 18:14b)
• The end of the king of fierce countenance: ... he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand--Dan 8:25e.
• How the king of fierce countenance falls in his attempt to overcome the mighty and the holy people:
(1) To his frustration, his indignation will but result in the cleansing of the sanctuary--Dan 8:13, 14 (• Dan 12:10; • Ps 119:67, 71; 140:12: • Pro 17:3; • Zech 13:9; • Mal 3:24; 4:1-3 • Rev 3:18)
(2) His indignation against God's purposes cannot move beyond the time allowed him by God, for at the time appointed the end shall be--Dan 8:19b. (• Dan 7:26; 8:13,14; 9:24-27; 11:35, 45; 12:4-13 • Rev 12:12)
(3) In the final day he shall be broken without hand--Dan 8:25b. (• Dan 2:34, 35, 44; 7:18, 21-22, 25-27; 8:25; 9:27; 11:45; • 11 Th 2:8 • all reference to the parousía) Broken without Hand points to the parousía of the Lord Jesus Christ to which there are 17 references in the New Testament: • Mt 24:3, 27, 37, 39; • I Cor 15:23; • I Thes 2:19; • 3:13; • 4:15; • 5:23; • II Thes 2:1, 8; • Jas 5:7, 8; • II Pet 1:16; • 3:4,12; • I John 2:28

DANIEL 9
• This Chapter gives us the revelation of the SEVENTY WEEKS. This is literally "seventy periods of seven." It is clear the reference is to 70 "sevens" of years, or 490 prophetic Years lifted out of the plane of ongoing history. We perceive that one "week" (seven years) of the seventy is cut off from the other "sixty-nine" and awaits fulfillment at the closing of this age. This final "seven" is divided in half to give us the final, very significant, three and one-half years of the end.
• In this chapter the anti-Christ is called: ...a prince that shall come--Dan 9:26.
• The revealed intention of the prince that shall come:
(1) Those joined with him shall destroy (spread corruption to) the city and the sanctuary--Dan 9:26. (• Ps 74:1-10; 79:1-5; • Eze5:11;7:22; • Rev 11:1-13 • I Cor 3:17)
(2) He shall confirm (establish) the covenant with many for one week (the last period of seven years)--Dan 9:27a. (• Ps 10:2-11; • Isa 14:13, 14; • Isa 28:14-19; • Dan 11:28-32 • II Th 21:9-12)
(3) In the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease--Dan 9:27b
(• Dan 8:11-13; 11:28-31; 12:11 • Heb 10:1-23)
(4) He will bring in the overspreading of abominations that causes desolation--Dan 9:27c.
(• Dan 8:13; 11:31; 12:11; • Mt 24:15; • Mk 13:14; • Lk 21:20 • Isa 24:12-15)
• The end of the prince that shall come, called the "desolator:" ...and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate ("the one causing the desolation") Dan 9:27d.
• The sixfold intention of the Lord God: The seventy sevens (490 Prophetic Years) are lifted out the plane of ongoing history for the completion of God's purposes in this age. In Dan 9:24-26 we discover His 'timetable" for closing the age as well as His sixfold purpose that will find completion within the whole of the 490 years. Note that He will deal perfectly with the three dimensions of sin that have plagued mankind.
(1) He will finish the transgression--Dan 9:248. (• Ex 34:6,7; • Ps 32:la, 5; • Isa 53:5 • Rom 5:18)
(2) He make an end of sins--Dan 9:24b. (• Gen 4:7; • Ex 34:6,7; • Ps 32:lb,5; • Isa 53:12 • Rom 5:19)
(3) He will make reconciliation for iniquity--Dan 9:24c. (• Ex 34:6,7; • Ps 32:2,5; • Isa 53:5,6,11 • Rom 5:10)
(4) He will bring in everlasting righteousness--Dan 9:24d.
(• Isa 51:5-8; • Jer 23:5, 6; • Rom 3:21, 22; • I Cor 1:30; • II Cor 5:21; • Phil 3:9 • Heb 9:12-14)
(5) He will seal up the vision and prophecy--Dan 9:24e (• Lk 24:25-27, 44, 45; • Acts 3:12-21; • John 19:28-30)
(6) He will anoint the most Holy--Dan 9:24f. (• Isa 61:1-3; • Lk 4:18-21; • Joel 2:28, 29; • Acts 2:17, 18; 10:45; • I Cor3:16; • Eph 2:19-22)

DANIEL 10 -12
• These chapters give details of the WAR AT THE END. We gain insight about the estate, or office, in which the anti-Christ will gain his ascendancy. This office shall have been occupied by several before the final man of sin claims it at the time of the end. In Dan 11:21-45 the revelation pertains particularly to the estate and strategy of its final occupant.
• In these Chapters the anti-Christ is called: …a vile person--Dan 11:21; ...a king that shall do according to his own will--Dan 11:36.

(As the time of the end comes on, there are other points yet to take our attention in Dan 11:21-45.)

• How God's people will move throughout the time of indignation released against them by the vile person:
(1) God will impart to them an understanding of the latter days--Dan 10:14. (• Dan 8:16, 17; 9:2, 23; 10:1, 11, 12; 11:33; 12:8-10 • Dan 11:35 and Eph 5:17)

• The end of the vile person: ...yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him--Dan 11:45b.
• A definitive statement from Paul regarding the end of the man of sin: And then shall that Wicked (one) be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming (His Parousía)--II Th 2:8.

THE TRIUMPHANT END OF THE AGE:
(1) Michael, the great prince, shall stand up--Dan 12:la. (• Dan 10:13,21; • Jude 9 • Rev 12:7, 8)
(2) Deliverance shall come to every one that shall be found written in the book--Dan 12:lb. (• Ex 32:32; • Ps 56:8; 69:28; • Phil 4:3; • Rev 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; • Rev 20:15; 21:27 • Rev 22:19)

(9) A blessing is pronounced for those who wait and come to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days--Dan,12:12. (This is 2 and one-half months after the close of the final three and one-half years. Could this be a time for bringing Christ's new order in the earth?] (• Mal 3:3-5; • Mk 9:1-10; • Acts 3:19-21; • Rev 20:4 • Isa 2:1-4)

The "Times" of Daniel
• Every prophetic vision of Daniel points to the time of the end. Dan7:26 ...unto the end; Dan 8:17...at the time of the end shall be the vision; Dan 9:27 ...even until the consummation; Dan 11:40 ...at the time of the end: Dan 12:4 ...even to the time of the end; Dan 12:9 ...till the time of the end; Dan 12:13 ...at the end of the days.
• All the time references of Daniel are regulated by the prophecy of Dan 9:24-27. Most of them relate to the final three and one-half years of the last seven years. This is the great tribulation of which Jesus spoke in Mt 24:21. It is the time of indignation to which we have reference in Dan 8:19; 11:30 and 11:36.
(1) Dan 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. (This amounts to 360 days • 720 days • 180 days = 1260 days, or three and one-half years. A Jewish year is reckoned as 360 days.)
(2) Dan 8:13b,14 ...How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days: then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. (This 2300 days is 220 days short of seven years, apparently the last seven years of the 490 Prophetic Years. Could not the Lord Jesus have been making reference to this in His statement of Mt 24:22? And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.)
(3) Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week (unit of "seven"): and in the midst of the week (the "seven") he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate ("the desolator"). (Literally, this is in the midst of the "unit of seven."
• This is the midpoint of the last seven years, leading us to the last three and one-half years. Thus, it becomes the regulatory Scripture for the prophecies of • Dan 7:25;
• Dan 12:6,7; • Dan 12:11; • Dan 12:12;• Rev 11:2; • Rev 11:3; • Rev 12:6; • Rev 12:14 and • Rev 13:5.
(4) Dan 12:6,7 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river; How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river; when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. (Compare with the same term in Dan 7:25.)
(5) Dan 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that moketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. (This is three and one-half years PLUS one month. Apparently this takes us beyond the close of the 490 Years.
(6) Dan 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. (This is three and one-half years PLUS two and a half months. Who can tell what this might mean? It is important that we take note of it--and wait to see its significance.)
(7) Dan 12:8,9 And I heard but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till THE TIME OF THE END.

The Corresponding "Times" of Revelation
• The time period in each of these passages from Revelation corresponds to the last three and one-half years about which we learn in the Daniel visions. They correspond exactly with the time and times and the dividing of time that we first find in Dan 7:25 and are to be regulated by the prophecy of Dan 9:24-27.
(1) Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. (= three and one-half years)
(2) Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. (360 days • 720 • 180 = 1260 days = three and one-half years)
(3) Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. (= three and one-half years)
(4) Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. (= three and one-half years)
(5) Rev 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. (= three and one-half years)
