OCTOBER 2008 Day 8

That is why we keep on talking to God about you since the day we heard about you. We ask him that you may know everything he wants you to do. We ask him that you may be very wise and that the Spirit will help you to understand.
We ask him that you will live the way the Lord wants you to live, so that you will please him in everything you do. We ask that you will do everything that is good. We ask that you will see the fruit from what you do. We ask that you will know more and more about God. God has wonderful power. And we ask him to give you all the strength you need to go through all your troubles, to be very patient in them, and to be happy. Thank the Father who has made us ready to be with the people of God who live in his light.

DAY 8—I remember when I first learned this.

I remember when Philippians 4:19 became personal for me. Look it up and read it. I was preaching for several days as a guest minister in a small country church composed of people who were poor. While there, I received a phone call from my wife that our rent was due and there was no money with which to pay it or the other bills. She needed $200 right away!

There had been no offerings from the people who were attending the meetings even though they were quite open to the Word I was bringing, along with an unusual presence of the Lord. With a feeling of distress, I poured out my complaint one afternoon before the Lord. As I presented my prayer to Him, I told Him I felt I was being faithful to His call and I was there in the little church at His bidding. But, I was distressed at having no money to send my family.

I had been studying the Bible and had come with an excitement upon the above Philippians passage. But, I told the Lord there was no evidence to me it was true. He asked me if I was going to believe His Word or believe the evidence. Oh, how I remember telling Him I believed His Word more than any evidence as to whether it was true or not! With nothing in my pocket, I began to rejoice in His faithfulness.

That night, as I arrived for the meeting, an elderly farmer came to me asking my forgiveness. I couldn’t imagine what he has done. He went on to say that the night before, the Lord had spoken to him he was to give something to me. He reached into his pocket and took out a wad of bills and placed it in my hands. After the meeting, as I returned to the home where I was staying, I took out the bills and found $201!

GRACIOUS LORD, we are coming to the place where there seems to be nothing secure for our future. I’ve been prone to worry that my family may have nothing to eat, nor a place to live. But, let me stop this worrying! We have Your faithfulness! We have Your Word! We have the promise of Your provision! We shall come through this with a testimony of Your greatness!

The Lord will provide for those who care for the poor.—Psalm 41:1-3
